01. Do you snack while you read? If so, favourite reading snack? Not really. Snackfood I like is stuff like potato crisps or chocolate, and I don't want fattty fingerprints in my books. 02. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you? In some books I mark passages with a horizontal line at the side, to be able to find them quickly when paging through the book. I don't like underlining in the text, let alone coloured textmarker stuff. This reminds me on someone on the Bookmooch forums who considered writing your name in a book "defacing" it, and said something like "we all learned as children that wasn't done"... Struck me as extremely weird. As a child I HAD TO write my name in my books (particularly textbooks). Collecting stuff like books in as pristine/unread condition as possible strikes me as weird, anyway. 03. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open? Sometimes, when I'll come back to it in a minute or so, I lay it down open, pages down, but generally I use bookmarks. 04. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both? Way more fiction. 05. Hardcopy or audiobooks? Hardcopies 06. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point? I'm a person who goes "just one more chapter", and then the book is over and the sun is rising. If the book is good, anyway. 07. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Nah, usually I can make a good enough guess from context. 08. What are you currently reading? Jingo by Terry Pratchett 09. What is the last book you bought? I bought a German omnibus of two novels by Lois McMaster Bujold for my mother. Memory and Komarr, I think. 10. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can read more than one at a time? One at a time, not counting stuff I need to read for studies (but that's rare, not fiction, generally not a whole book...). When I start a new book while still reading another, it's a sign the one I started first didn't hold my interest, and chances are I won't finish it at all. 11. Do you like re-reading books? I re-read more than I read fresh books, I think. It's just so frustrating to spend a lot of money (10 euros or so, 's a lot) on a new book, only to find that you don't like it. Better stick with something I know I like. Tags: meme

Uni was ragging my nerves, and after the semester was done, I fell into a bit of a hole and buried myself in escapism, mainly comics. Creativity - "writing", drawing - was completely shot, though I think it's getting better. Having to finish an art trade picture with a deadline helped. I'm pretty frustrated because I can't just pull an image from my brain when I draw, but have to go through half a dozen sketches if I want it to be even only passable, which is pretty stupid, I guess. Ehwell, what with me busy with absorbing fiction (apart from changing the tilt of my small desk and getting a haircut), nothing interesting happened. Meme-time. Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given. I got 5 from hellmutt, if anyone else wants to give me keywords, I am curious. What I seem to be not good at is the "elaborating" part. ( Stuff in here )Tags: meme

1. Comment on this post. 2. I will give you a letter. 3. Think of 5 fictional characters whose names begin with that letter and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ. I got "R" from Becca, I think... This would have been easier if I had a better memory for names. Rosie from Elfquest - The Rebels She's... really chipper. I like how she and Scorch play off each other. Rayek from Elfquest What can I say. That's character development, over the years, or whatever. (and, yes, Rosie came to my mind first. So?) Rob Anybody from Discworld Small, blue, violent, with his heart in the right spot, and delightfully awkward if a situation does not call for headbutting, or the like. also, has a PL[a]N. Ridcully, MustrumBest mage ever written. Well, maybe not, but definitely a nice change. Rralken. One of mine. Sort of. Ancestor of a character I'd like to turn into an active RPG character. He had a run-in with a fae whom he angered, and got turned into a squirrel. He got better, but he's history. Tags: meme

Instructions: * Grab the nearest book. * Open the book to page 56. * Find the fifth sentence. * Post the text of the next seven sentences in your journal along with these instructions. * Don't dig for your favourite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST. The complete text on p56 of the nearest book is Deer - Carricature Keep clean, sweeping lines, tapering body. In the adult, the arched neck contributes to the feeling of grace. For the fawn, emphasize the short body and long legs. Note how the crown is suggested. To give the stag an air of stateliness, broaden the chest and neck, and add a lot of flare to the antlers. (Ken Hultgren: The Art of Animal Drawing) The requested sentences from the nearest prose book are He took out his pocket watch and his head jerked back. "Wow, look at the time. I've got to go, Stephanie." "Go? Go where?" "Things to do, I'm afraid. Number one is finding out why that nice gentleman was sent here, and number two is finding out who sent him." "You can't leave me alone," she said, following him into the living room." Derek Landy: Skulduggery Pleasant The "nice gentleman" tried to kill Stephanie, who is 12 years old. Just to explain why she does not seem overly whiny to me here. That's the meme over with, but just for fun, the next seven sentences, too: "Yes," he corrected, "I can. You'll be perfectly safe." "The front door's off!" "Well, yes. You'll be perfectly safe as long as they don't come through the front door." He pulled on his coat but she snatched his hat away. "Are you taking my hat hostage?" he asked doubtfully. Which, indeed, would be a bit of a problem, considering he's an undead skeleton, who would stand out if he just went out on the street without a disguise. He is also directly responsible for the front door being off. A scene which neatly fits the first two points on my "Likes" list in the last post. Tags: books, meme
