Which modern invention do you think the world would be better off without?

Are the people who answer "cell phones" serious?

With stuff like ABC weapons, landmines, and bloody bombs camouflaged as toys so that kids pick them up, there are people who pick the cell phone as the one invention the world would be better without?

Gunpowder's not modern, and nor's nuclear fission. Getting rid of "an invention" (landmines OR nail bombs OR AK-47s?) is meaningless if the underpinning scientific knowledge remains. The same thing, or an equivalent, will be (re)developed to fill the same requirement.

No "invention" was made in isolation from the general body of human knowledge. We have battlefield surgeons to thank for superglue, the space programme to thank for velcro... and land- and oil-hungry maniacs to thank for all the creative ways to blow children's limbs off.
